Fisheries Minister Jon Ford has appointed two highly qualified advisers to assist with the management of the Abrolhos Islands, off the Geraldton coast.

Dr Jane Prince has been reappointed to the Abrolhos Islands Management Advisory Committee to represent the conservation sector, while fisherman Kris Carlberg will represent commercial operators.

Mr Ford said the sustainable management of the unique Abrolhos Islands system was paramount.

“The islands and their surrounds were a significant part of the State’s commercial rock lobster fishery and increasingly were becoming a tourist drawcard,” he said.

“Both advisers have a wealth of practical experience and will play a key role in the sustainable management of the islands.”

A member of the committee since 1998, Dr Prince has a background in marine ecology, with strong interests in conservation and sustainable management of marine ecosystems.

Mr Carlberg is a third generation fisherman in the southern part of the Abrolhos Islands with 10 years’ experience in the rock lobster industry.

He also has an extensive education in fisheries science and is studying for a Master’s degree in marine resource management.

The Abrolhos Islands are vested in the Fisheries Minister for the conservation of flora and fauna, tourism and purposes associated with the fishing industry.

Mr Ford said the Gallop Government was committed to protecting and enhancing the Abrolhos Islands as part of the State’s unique environment.
