Sport and Recreation Minister Bob Kucera today announced a further incentive for sport and recreation organisations to enter the 2005 Sport and Recreation Industry Awards.

A Minister’s Award for Industry Excellence has been created for this year’s awards, carrying a $10,000 prize for the winning organisation.

“This is now the most prestigious sport and recreation industry award in Australia,” Mr Kucera said.

The Sport and Recreation Industry Awards are held every two years and recognise the contributions of Western Australia’s sport and recreation industry across a wide range of categories.

The Minister’s Award for Industry Excellence is presented to the most outstanding finalist from all the award categories.

The awards highlight and reward the efforts of those working behind the scenes in WA sport and recreation.

“Sport is as much about the hundreds of thousands of volunteers, administrators, officials and coaches who make up this great industry as it is about our highly successful athletes and players,” Mr Kucera said.

“The awards serve the important purpose of highlighting examples of best practice and encouraging those in the sport and recreation industry to share new ideas.”

About 350 industry representatives will attend the award ceremony on November 4 to acknowledge the achievements of organisations and individuals in various industry sectors.

The Minister said the 2005 Sport and Recreation Industry Awards reflected what sport and recreation was about - achievement, excellence, creativity and innovation.

“I encourage all organisations to put in a nomination and be recognised for their sporting contributions, because the Gallop Government is recognising what the sports industry contributes to our unique lifestyle,” he said.

For more information and how to nominate, contact Charles Hayne at the Department of Sport and Recreation on 9492 9833 or log on to http://www.dsr.wa.gov.au

Nominations close 5pm, Friday, September 16.
