    Play by the Rules

Sport and Recreation Minister Bob Kucera and Equal Opportunity Commissioner Yvonne Henderson today launched an interactive website aimed at reducing incidents of discrimination, harassment and child abuse in sport.

Mr Kucera said sport should be a level playing field for all, yet there were frequent and often unreported cases of players, officials, volunteers or administrators being given a hard time which could include factors such as race, gender, or physical ability.

“There have been cases of coaches abusing players, volunteer administrators receiving unfair and stressful criticism and cases of sexual harassment, plus other unpleasant forms of discrimination,” the Minister said.

“’Play By The Rules’ encourages fair and safe play in sport and recreation by providing a best practice suite of information and tools that will help prevent and deal with discrimination, harassment and abuse.”

Commissioner Henderson said fair minded Western Australians wanted to stamp out racism and discrimination in sport, and this website would be an invaluable weapon to achieving this aim.

“Sport impacts on society as a whole, from young to old, from players and spectators to club officials and volunteers. We believe everyone can learn something from this website because it contains information and free on-line training about discrimination, harassment and child protection,” Ms Henderson said.

Mr Kucera and Ms Henderson said the website would significantly reduce the level of bias, abuse and unfair treatment young participants could experience while playing sport.

It would also provide for the specific needs of governing bodies, clubs and groups, coaches and officials, players and participants, parents and children.

The website would explain people’s rights and how the law protected their right to fairly and safely participate in sport and recreation activities, as well as providing information about a person’s legal and ethical responsibilities.

“It will also help fulfil the Gallop Government’s target of increasing physical activity levels among Western Australians and protect our unique sporting lifestyle,” Mr Kucera said.

Play by the Rules - is a joint initiative of the Australian Sports Commission and all State and Territory departments of sport and recreation, equal opportunity commissions and anti-discrimination agencies.
