Minister clears way for Esperance iron ore export increase

Environment Minister Judy Edwards has given environmental approval for Esperance Port Authority to increase iron exports through the port.

Dr Edwards has endorsed Environmental Protection Authority recommendations that will allow the port to increase iron ore exports to eight million tonnes a year. Currently the port handles about five million tonnes of iron ore.

The Minister said the EPA recommendations had been subjected to a two-week public appeals process during which no submissions were received.

“This would indicate that there is little community concern about the proposal,” she said.

“However, the EPA did raise the issue of increased noise because of the greater number of train movements associated with the high level of iron ore exports.

“Consequently, I have determined that a working group comprising the port authority, Shire of Esperance and key State Government agencies be set up to examine options to mitigate noise impacts.

“One priority will be to look at the practicability of minimising the number of train movements between the port and the rail yard.

“The working group also will develop an implementation program for noise mitigation strategies and report by March 31, 2006.”
