Travellers setting out to explore Western Australia’s Pilbara region can now better plan their trip with the release of a new touring map by the Department of Land Information (DLI).

Land Information Minister John Bowler said the Pilbara Touring Map was the latest release in DLI’s StreetSmart series and covered south to Carnarvon and north to Port Hedland.

“The Pilbara Touring Map is the ideal guide for travellers seeking to explore our diverse and vast northern region,” Mr Bowler said.

The Pilbara map follows on from the recently launched Gascoyne map and is one of the first to feature revised zones and boundaries in the Ningaloo and Muiron Islands Marine Parks.

“The map also provides a comprehensive view of the Karijini and Millstream-Chichester National Parks,” the Minister said.

“These places are significant in that they are representative of the wide range of unique tourist destinations that regional WA has to offer. Karijini National Park, for example, features the spectacular Wittenoom Gorge and is the second largest national park in WA.”

The map also contains information on historical trails and sites, restricted areas, sanctuary zones and general places of interest. Protocol and safety advice tips relating to camping, general outback travel, cyclones, and mines are also included - all handy for the planning of a safe and successful trip.

“It is not only a practical working map, but doubles as an information resource on an area that measures around 500,000sq.km,” Mr Bowler said.

The towns of Onslow, Dampier, Wickham, Point Samson, Cossack, Karratha, Port Hedland, South Hedland, Tom Price and Newman are featured separately, and are accompanied by respective road name indexes. ‘Things to See and Do’ are referenced in each town.

This map, and others in the StreetSmart Touring Map series, can be purchased online at http://www.dli.wa.gov.au or found at selected newsagents, bookshops and visitors’ centres.
