An indigenous leadership program designed to strengthen leadership skills of people in Kimberley region communities is currently being conducted.

The program, ‘Making Connections’, was based on a pilot program held in the Gascoyne during 2003 with the Department of Local Government and Regional Development providing $50,000 to assist the Kimberley program.

Local Government and Regional Development Minister John Bowler said the program had widespread interest and would bring greater community leadership development opportunities for indigenous people in Western Australia.

“The program is an exceptional opportunity for people to gather ideas, create extensive networks and share in a constructive learning experience,” Mr Bowler said.

“It is an initiative allowing indigenous communities to expand their personal and professional skills for the benefit of the region.”

Twenty-four people from across the region undertook the first three-day module in May, part of the nine-day course to be conducted over a three-month period. The course will cover topics building relationships and networking, developing partnerships, cultural awareness and identifying local issues.

Module one was held in Derby, module two is at the Argyle diamond mine from June 24 to June 27 and module three will be in Halls Creek from August 1 to August 4.

“The Gallop Government is very keen to invest in people who are dedicated to facilitate the healthy growth of regional economies and communities, and I congratulate all participants for their commitment,” Mr Bowler said.

“I applaud the Kimberley Development Commission, community groups and organisations and local governments who have embraced this unique program.”

Funding for the Making Connections program is part of the State Government’s $1million commitment to leadership development in WA.
