Seniors’ Minister Bob Kucera today called for nominations of outstanding seniors from across the State for the 2005 WA Seniors Awards.

Mr Kucera said the awards provided a chance to recognise and celebrate the contributions seniors made to their community.

“Our seniors have contributed to the development of Western Australia and continue to make a difference by sharing their experience, knowledge and leadership with younger generations,” he said.

“One of the best ways to recognise the generous contribution seniors make to the community is to nominate someone you know for a WA Seniors Award.”

The awards are open to people aged 60 years or more as at June 1. The new Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Leadership Award category is open to elders aged more than 50 years.

Nominations can also be made for the categories of Community Achievement, Sport and Recreation, Arts and Culture, and Workplace Participation.

Numerous nominations for the Community Achievement category in previous years have led to a division into three sub-categories - Service, Intergenerational and Education and Learning.

Six Regional Seniors of the Year from the Northern, Mid-West, Goldfields, Wheatbelt, Southern and Metropolitan areas and the overall BankWest WA Senior of the Year will be selected from the most outstanding nominees.

The Active Ageing Innovations Award will recognise innovative planning or responses to the ageing of our population through policies, programs, services and activities that are allowing seniors to lead full, rich and satisfying lifestyles. Individuals or agencies can be nominated.

WA journalists, advertisers and press photographers can also nominate for the awards’ media category recognising the positive portrayal of seniors.

Nominations for the 2005 Awards open today and close on Friday, July 29.

Sponsors for this year’s awards include BankWest, St. Louis Estate, The Western Australian Senior, Woolworths Supermarkets, SkyWest, The West Australian, Channel Nine Perth, Radio 6PR, WIN Television WA and Council on the Ageing (WA).

Nomination kits are available from the Office for Seniors’ Interests and Volunteering on (08) 9328 9155 (1800 671 233 country callers) or at http://www.community.wa.gov.au/seniors
