Local Government Minister John Bowler has congratulated the 402 successful candidates in yesterday’s local government elections.

Mr Bowler said they and 308 other councillors elected unopposed had the opportunity to make a major contribution to their communities.

The Minister congratulated all election candidates for their commitment to local government.

“Councillors take on a complex and demanding task on behalf of their communities,” he said.

“They are expected to make a heavy commitment, both in time and in their personal accountability.

“While the community and the Government expect high standards of propriety and transparency in council affairs, many new councillors will have limited experience in formal administrative and meeting processes.”

Mr Bowler said both the Department of Local Government and Regional Development and the Western Australian Local Government Association would provide training for new councillors, shire presidents and mayors in coming months.

Information for councillors was also available from the department’s website http://www.dlgrd.wa.gov.au
