At a time when Western Australia’s warm northern coast attracts those wanting to escape winter, a new map has been released as a ‘one stop shop’ for information on our State’s beautiful Gascoyne Coast.

Land Information Minister John Bowler said the Gascoyne Coast Touring Map, the latest release in the State Government’s StreetSmart Touring Map series, covers north to Onslow and south to Shark Bay and is one of the first to feature the new boundaries of one of WA’s premier tourist destinations - Ningaloo Marine Park.

Mr Bowler said the Gallop Government is improving the quality of services to all Western Australians, wherever they live and the map provided the ideal excuse to discover the many attractions of regional WA.

“It’s not only a practical working map, but also doubles as an information resource on a place that prides itself as WA’s soft adventure and eco-tourism capital,” he said.

“Coupled with practical advice such as the location of fuel and rest stops and tips on safety, the map also highlights special tourist spots and hints on things to see and do.

“It is also the first of a kind to provide broad information on restricted areas, sanctuary and special purpose zones.

“The Gascoyne Coast Touring Map is an extremely handy tool for any tourist.”

Safety advice tips relating to cyclones, drinking water, the marine environment and pastoral areas are also provided, along with historical snippets on places of interest and legal requirements on fishing.

The map fits in with the existing look and feel of the StreetSmart series, which includes the metropolitan street directory developed by the Department of Land Information. Aspects such as sealed and unsealed roads, postal district boundaries, and local authority boundaries are also referenced in the same way.

The towns of Carnarvon, Exmouth and Coral Bay are also reproduced at a larger scale and are accompanied by a road name index.

This map and others in the StreetSmart Touring Map series can be purchased online at http://www.dli.wa.gov.au or found at selected newsagents, bookshops and visitors’ centres.
