Local Government and Regional Development Minister John Bowler yesterday met with the Town of Port Hedland to discuss a draft report on the financial and budgetary strategy of the council.
Late last year, following considerable public debate over the finances of the Town of Port Hedland, a meeting was held whereby the State Government agreed to provide assistance, in the form of a report, to the council.
Mr Bowler said the report, produced by BDO Consulting in conjunction with the Departments of Treasury and Finance and Local Government and Regional Development, would assist the town with balancing its medium to long-term revenue resources and expenditure needs. He praised the councillors for having the courage to initiate the study into their past financial management.
“I am deeply concerned about some of the findings in the report in relation to financial accountability, but the good news is that the councillors I met want to draw a line in the sand and move forward,“ he said.
“The council will need to deal with the draft report as a matter of urgency.”
Mr Bowler said he was pleased, however, the report indicated that despite the need for improvements in some areas, the Town of Port Hedland was currently in a sound financial position, notwithstanding media reports over the last 12 months to the contrary.
“I remain committed to the finalisation of this strategy document which will enable the town to continue to effectively provide services and facilities for its increasing population,” he said.
“The State Government looks forward to working with the council and the greater Port Hedland community to a build a better future for all residents.”
