Premier Geoff Gallop has opened the world-leading Telstra Burns Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Unit at Royal Perth Hospital.

Telstra’s $1million donation was inspired by the outstanding work of Dr Fiona Wood and the RPH team in their response to the Bali disaster.

The State Government contributed the extra $2million towards the centre’s establishment.

The burns centre will provide better long-term care and improved aesthetic, functional and psychological outcomes.

Dr Gallop said the centre would increase survival rates from burn injuries and improve the quality of life for people with burns.

“The burns centre will further establish Western Australia as a world leader in burns care,” he said.

“The donation from Telstra and the contribution from the State Government combined, is a tribute to Dr Fiona Wood and her team who did a tremendous job after the Bali tragedy.

“The aim of this centre is to increase specialist training and research to improve the efficiency of burns treatments.”

The Premier said the centre would have more staff, improved technology and improved privacy for patients.

An important aspect of the new Telstra Unit is that the clinical service will be embedded in research.

The Telstra unit will service outpatients and will provide improved occupational and physiotherapy services.
