The Gallop Government has paved the way for the re-opening of the Windarra nickel operation in the State’s Goldfields region.

Windarra is owned by WMC Resources Ltd pursuant to a State Agreement Act (the Poseidon Nickel Agreement) but the mine is not currently in operation.

Niagara Mining Limited is seeking to acquire ownership of the project with a view to bringing the Windarra nickel operations back into production.

The State Government has indicated its willingness to facilitate a transfer of ownership of Windarra, subject to final agreement being reached between the companies involved and the State Agreement being modernised to reflect contemporary standards.

Changes include the full payment of royalties on a re-opened mining operation and an unconditional environment performance bond to cover outstanding rehabilitation obligations.

In addition, the deletion of the local government ratings exemptions clause from the Agreement Act will generate direct benefits for the local economy and community.

State Development Minister Clive Brown welcomed the proposed arrangements.

“I would like to acknowledge the role of Eyre MLA John Bowler, who has been an enthusiastic supporter of the re-opening of the Windarra nickel mine and the development of the Goldfields region,” Mr Brown said.

“This is an important project for the Goldfields and the Laverton region in particular.

“The Gallop Government has worked with industry to create 80,000 new jobs and reached the lowest unemployment on current records.

“Projects like the re-opening of Windarra will add to our record levels of economic growth and business investment.”
