Education and Training Minister Alan Carpenter has urged parents to enrol their children in vacation swimming lessons and said there has never been a cheaper time to do it.

“Summer swimming classes have never been more affordable following the Gallop Government’s ‘Dollar A Day’ initiative announced in October,” Mr Carpenter said.

“We’ve slashed the cost of VacSwim classes which means parents now only have to pay one dollar per day per child (plus pool entry) and it’s even cheaper for families with three children or more.”

Mr Carpenter said the $1.8million ‘Dollar A Day’ initiative was developed in a bid to boost decreasing enrolments in the VacSwim program and improve water safety at Western Australian beaches and swimming pools.

“VacSwim enrolments have been in decline for a decade,” he said.

“This decline accelerated during a two-year privatisation in the late 90s and has continued ever since - until now.

“Our ‘Dollar A Day’ initiative has seen the biggest increase in enrolments in 10 years.

“Enrolments have jumped 5.5 per cent, increasing from 38,259 in December 2003 to 40,419 at the same time in December 2004.

“And this figure is set to rise even further with an estimated 8,000 late enrolments expected between now and when the program finishes in late January.

“I am pleased to see the positive impact our initiative has had, however, we still have a way to go to be on par with the 70,000 enrolments we had 10 years ago.”

Mr Carpenter said VacSwim classes were available to children over the age of five years right up to Year 12 students.

“VacSwim operates all over the State, from Esperance to Kununurra,” he said.

“Classes start at the very basic swimming level with children able to move through competency levels right up to the bronze medallion level.

“At $10 for 10 lessons, or $27.50 for a family of three or more children, VacSwim is the best value in town.”

VacSwim lessons are run in two sessions. The first begins next Tuesday, December 28 and runs until Friday, January 7 and the second runs from Monday, January 10 until Friday, January 21.
