    An estimated 700 people will gather in Perth this week for the National Leaders in Sport conference, including a big contingent of Western Australian delegates.

    “The State Government has given $40,000 to cover the registration costs of representatives from regional and metropolitan WA,” Sport and Recreation Minister Bob Kucera said.

    “This conference is a rare opportunity to hear from some top international speakers.

    “It was an opportunity I did not want our sports administrators and elite athletes to miss.”

    The conference, to be held over two days from November 11 at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre, will cover some of the biggest issues currently facing sport.

    A particular focus will be on leadership and standards and how sport can regain the high moral ground following recent scandals.

    It is the first time such a significant national sports conference has been held in Perth and features speakers of exceptional calibre, including former Wallaby captain Nick Farr-Jones, former International Olympic Committee marketing manager and current Formula One adviser Michael Payne, founder of the UK-based Extreme Group Alistair Gosling and Australian Soccer Association chief executive John O’Neill.

    A large number of local sports administrators will be in attendance, as well as Western Warriors cricketers and members of the Perth Orioles netball team.

    The National Leaders in Sport Conference, run by the Department of Sport and Recreation, is being held in conjunction with the Active 2004 conference that will include discussions on:
    • legal reform;
    • volunteer and clubs management;
    • keeping children safe and new child protection legislation;
    • street sports; and
    • regional sport and recreation.
    Sports Ministers from across Australia will also gather in Perth on Friday November 12 for the annual Sport and Recreation Minister’s Council (SRMC) meeting.

    “WA has put a number of issues up for discussion, including rates of physical activity and national obesity, fare equalisation and governance review,” Mr Kucera said.

    Other issues to be discussed at the meeting include World Anti-Doping Implementation, the 2006 Commonwealth Games, female participation in sport, public liability insurance and risk management.
