Asbestos roofs to be removed from Rottnest Island

All asbestos roofs on Rottnest Island will be replaced with colorbond steel under a $3million priority program.

Tourism Minister Bob Kucera told the Asbestos Diseases Society ecumenical service today the State Government’s roof replacement program, originally planned for completion in 2012, would now be completed within a year.

“While there is no immediate danger and interim measures to make asbestos roofs safe under the 10-year replacement program are in place, I have told the Rottnest Island Authority (RIA) I want the roofs replaced faster,” Mr Kucera said.

“The RIA will accelerate its replacement program by bringing forward $1.5million in capital works and the State Government will provide an additional $1.5million to ensure all roofs are replaced by the end of 2005.

“The reason why we can provide this important funding is because the Gallop Government has delivered balanced budgets unlike the Liberals who had five deficits in eight years.

“The safety of visitors and island staff make this program a priority and I am determined to see it completed as soon as possible.”

The Minister said there were 169 buildings on the island with asbestos roofs, including holiday units, Kingstown Barracks, the Lodge, YHA (Youth Hostels Association) accommodation, staff housing and leased buildings.

He said the program would involve removing 15,000sq.m of asbestos cement roofing.

Work has already begun on the tender process. All work is due to be completed by the start of the summer season in 2005.
