A $500,000 refurbishment of the Quokka Arms Hotel, opened today by Tourism Minister Bob Kucera, clearly showed Rottnest Island was open for business.

“The refurbishment marks another stage in the evolution of the Quokka Arms but more importantly underlines the commitment the Gallop Government has to the long-term future of the island,” Mr Kucera said.

“Our $20million commitment to securing the long-term financial future of Rottnest is well under way and $4million has already been spent upgrading the accommodation at Fays and Longreach Bays.

“This summer visitors will see a significantly improved Island - there are better facilities, better accommodation and a new attitude toward service and standards. There is more to come.”

The Minister said the Rottnest Island Taskforce had provided a prioritised blueprint for $20million of improvements to the island’s infrastructure.

These would ensure the island infrastructure would be capable of catering for the 500,000 visitors who went to the island each year and for expansion of local, interstate and overseas visitor numbers.

The refurbishment of the Quokka Arms had improved public and employee safety, completed much-needed heritage works and improved the overall amenity. Visitors would see a new and upgraded courtyard, a clean and upgraded Hampton’s Bar and new furniture and lighting.
