A recognised need for more youth activities in Boddington has culminated in the official opening of the Boddington Youth Centre today.

Peel and the South-West Minister Bob Kucera said the Shire of Boddington deserved high praise for acting on a survey of local residents in 2001, which found a lack of facilities for local youth as the number one deficiency in the district.

Members of a youth support group then went on to transform the art room of the former Boddington District High School into a fully functional youth centre.

The project has received more than $70,000 from a variety of Government and industry sources - including $11,500 from the Peel Development Commission.

“The Boddington Old School site is the perfect venue to establish a youth centre,” Mr Kucera said.

“I am delighted to be here today to see for myself how this facility will help strengthen the local community.”

The youth centre will provide a place for local young people to meet and socialise and is fitted out with a range of activities, including hockey, soccer and pool tables.

Volunteers will supervise the centre and the Shire of Boddington is currently looking to employ a youth activities officer to organise other activities.
