Sport and Recreation Minister Bob Kucera today welcomed news that Western Australia would have the opportunity to compete for the right to host a team in the expanded Super 12 rugby union competition.
The Board of SANZAR, which represents South African, New Zealand and Australian Rugby Unions, today announced Australia and South Africa would have an extra team each in the expanded competition from 2006.
"There is already a groundswell of support for WA to host a team, particularly from local rugby fans as well as from South Africa," Mr Kucera said.
"A working party has been working on the preparatory work for a submission.
"The working party is now awaiting the criteria and process from Australian Rugby Union so Perth can finalise its submission.”
