Senior Qantas Airways Limited executive Robert Gurney has been appointed to Tourism Western Australia’s Board of Commissioners, Tourism Minister Bob Kucera announced today.

“Mr Gurney is the head of Sales and Distribution for Qantas, he has a strong aviation background and he is also vice chairman of the Australian Tourism Export Council, one of Australia’s peak national tourism bodies,” Mr Kucera said.

“He will provide important aviation expertise and a strategic global business perspective to Tourism Western Australia’s activities and further diversify the board’s expertise.”

The appointment of Mr Gurney coincides with the reappointment of Tourism Western Australia chairman Alan Mulgrew and two existing commissioners, union president Helen Creed and hotel general manager Laurie O’Meara. All three have been reappointed for further three-year terms.

“Tourism Western Australia’s Board of Commissioners includes mining, business, legal, restaurant and tourism industry leaders,” the Minister said.

“The tourism industry is now worth $3.8billion each year to WA and the industry has an exciting year ahead, with Perth hosting the Australian Tourism Exchange in June 2005.

“The international tourism spotlight will be on WA when this event is held here for the first time in its history.”

The Tourism Western Australia Board of Commissioners includes: Mr Alan Mulgrew (chairman), Mr Laurie O’Meara (deputy), Ms Helen Creed, Ms Janet Holmes a Court, Ms Kate Lamont, Ms Sonja Mitchell, Mr Michael Monaghan, Mr Anthony Quahe and Dr David Smith.
