Sport and Recreation Minister Bob Kucera welcomed the historic Australian cycling gold medal at the Athens Olympic Games by 22-year-old Western Australian Ryan Bayley.
“Not only is this a fantastic achievement for Ryan and something that all Australians will share; it is a most notable milestone for WA athletes competing at the Olympics,” Mr Kucera said.
“This is the first individual gold medal won by a Western Australian since swimmer Lyn McKenzie (nee Clements) won a gold medal in the 100m butterfly at the Mexico City Olympics in 1968.
“We have had to wait 36 years for a Western Australian to win an individual gold medal but we have had so many memorable moments of Olympic glory and competitive determination in between.
“Our strongest support goes out to every Olympic athlete at Athens who is representing Australia and particularly to Ryan for his exceptional achievement.”
A welcome home parade will be held for the WA Olympians on September 9.
