Western Australia’s diverse recreation industry will come under the one banner from today with the launch of the Active Alliance.

Sport and Recreation Minister Bob Kucera said the State Government had facilitated the alliance by providing $300,000 in funding for the appointment of an executive officer for a three-year period.

“The Active Alliance brings together the four key peak recreation bodies in WA to speak as one united voice,” Mr Kucera said.

The alliance will comprise the Leisure Institute of Western Australia (LIWA), Fitness WA, Parks and Leisure WA and Outdoors WA.

While maintaining their independence, the peak bodies will develop strong links in areas such as advocacy and training to provide a strong and integrated approach to furthering the interests of the industry.

“The alliance will advise and guide 1,300 service providers on the provision of quality facilities, the implementation of standards and codes of practice and industrial relations issues,” the Minister said.

“In the future, the alliance will act as a regulatory body, overseeing leisure facilities such as health clubs to ensure they meet the relevant standards.

“By focusing on increasing physical activity and improving industry-wide training standards, the Active Alliance will stimulate the industry’s capacity to provide a more professional service.

“This is a big step forward our recreation industry and is the result of several years of hard work.”
