Environment Minister Cheryl Edwardes today encouraged Western Australians to enter the prestigious Banksia Environmental Awards in the year 2001.
Mrs Edwardes said she knew of numerous people and organisations in Western Australia who were committed to the conservation and management of the State's wonderful landscapes, plants and animals.
“The Banksia Environmental Foundation continues its exceptional effort in recognising the many organisations, both private and public, which are not only environmentally responsible but committed to the preservation of our environment for future generations,” she said.
“These awards have provided a significant benchmark for achievement in environmental excellence and there are many people and organisations in WA worthy of recognition.
“Though many of the awards are presented to organisations, it is timely to remember that behind these organisations are committed individuals and these awards are designed to recognise their participation.”
Mrs Edwardes said the response to the Banksia Environment Foundation awards indicated the community involvement in conservation and the environment.
“As Environment Minister it is encouraging to see the many men, women and children who actively work in their own local communities, at home and at work, to improve our environment,” she said.
“These awards, established 12 years ago, not only serve to recognise environmental excellence, but also enhance and raise the profiles of many essential projects being carried out in the State.
“The Department of Conservation and Land Management has won a Banksia Environmental Award for its ground-breaking Western Shield project, the Water Corporation was recognised for its innovative Waterwise Schools Program and Cockburn Cement Ltd and the Ascot Waters development were both finalists last year.”
The Banksia Awards are open each year from November and close on March 30. Winners are announced on the weekend preceding World Environment Day on June 5. For more information contact http://www.banksiafdn.com or ring (03) 9419 7188.
