Environment Minister Cheryl Edwardes today announced the South-West Region will receive almost $75,000 in rebates under the Waste Management and Recycling Fund.

This amount includes the following councils:

    City of Albany $6,006.27
    Shire of Boddington $166.58
    Shire of Boyup Brook $981.49
    Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes $391.89
    City of Bunbury $11,868.68
    Shire of Busselton $19,718.19
    Shire of Capel $1,367.22
    Shire of Dardanup $1,636.36
    Shire of Donnybrook-Balingup $2,349.25
    Shire of Harvey $3,511.22
    City of Mandurah $22,510.05
    Shire of Murray $3,380.70
    Shire of Waroona $870.33

“Rebates totalling $604,410 have been distributed in this round, bringing the total that has been paid to councils under the scheme to more than $2.2 million,” Mrs Edwardes said.

This fourth round of payments under the Municipal Recycling Services scheme provides rebates to local councils around the State for recycling waste.

Mrs Edwardes congratulated the South-West Region, which received the grant for its recycling effort of 6130.8 tonnes.

The Waste Management and Recycling Fund is drawn from a levy on waste disposed to landfill.

The fund has been established to help reduce disposal of waste to landfill. The Municipal Recycling Services rebate scheme is one of eight programs in the fund.

Payments of recycling grants are based on claims submitted by local councils every six months.

“This scheme is having an important impact on recycling in this State by rewarding councils on their recycling performance,” Mrs Edwardes said.

“This is the fourth period of funding under this program. In this round, the combined local government recycling effort amounted to 69,059 tonnes. This is an 18 per cent improvement over the previous period.”

Mrs Edwardes said the Government remained committed to reducing waste to landfill and recognised the importance of providing direct support for local government recycling services in order to achieve this result.

The Government is currently looking at an improved rebate scheme to encourage greater resource recovery. Details will be announced in the near future.
