Smart businesses say yes to training
10/12/2000 11:00 AM
The $700,000 Small Business Smart Business training program is being eagerly embraced by the State’s small business sector, according to Minister for Small Business Hendy Cowan.
Mr Cowan said almost 200 applications for program funding had already been made from small businesses across the State.
Vouchers, valued at $200 each, are available to applicants who can use them at approved training organisations. Businesses are able to undertake any training relevant to their business, including computing, accounting, customer service or business and office management.
“Small businesses often overlook formal training, so this is a great opportunity to encourage small business operators to seek training for themselves or their staff,” Mr Cowan said.
“In the pilot program, only 50 per cent of participants said they had been involved in training before.
“The training on offer is very flexible and could include anything from one-on-one online training to formal classes in customer service.
“Seventy-two per cent of those original participants chose computer training.”
Mr Cowan said the partnership between the Small Business Development Corporation (SBDC) and the Department of Employment and Training had proved very effective, especially the opportunity to utilise the State-wide Business Enterprise Centre (BEC) network to process applications.
“General benefits from training include improved skills, knowledge and understanding, greater confidence and an increased capacity to cope with change,” Mr Cowan said.
“More specific benefits could include enhanced customer service, better marketing and increased sales.”
