Media Statements - Government acknowledges support for people with disabilities

Two South-West residents have been honoured for their support for people with disabilities by Disability Services Minister Paul Omodei at a ceremony at Parliament House today.

Mr Omodei presented Making a Difference certificates to:

Lesley Cain of Collie for supporting people with disabilities through an ‘open door’ policy at her home, and for tireless fundraising for many community groups; and -
Darell Wills of Binningup, for more than 30 years of dedication to improving community participation for people with disabilities, especially in the field of integrated education.

The Making A Difference awards were established this year by the Disability Services Commission to recognise the contribution individuals and organisations have made to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities.

Mr Omodei said the awards acknowledged those who had made a substantial contribution to the community through their selfless dedication to helping people with disabilities in Western Australia.

“Everyone honoured here today is rewarded by the knowledge that they have made life brighter, more rewarding and more fulfilling for a fellow Western Australian,” he said.

“They recognise that improving the quality of life of people with disabilities and their families is not just the responsibility of Government or disability organisations but of the community as a whole.

“They have proved that one person can make a difference to the lives of others.”

More than 40 recipients were nominated by a range of organisations and individuals within the disability sector. This year’s presentation was the inaugural event, to be held annually
