The State Government today announced a regional development funding package aimed at diversifying the economic base of Collie and Donnybrook in the State’s South-West.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional Development Hendy Cowan said nearly $500,000 had been allocated to the towns to fund key initiatives which would encourage new business and industry, and assist with the impact of changes in the local economy.
Collie’s motor sport complex - Motoring South West - has received funding of $340,000 to purchase ex-drag racing equipment from Ravenswood Raceway and undertake track modification and enhancement works.
The works include track resurfacing of the existing sprint circuit, concrete barriers, fencing, lighting, a control tower, PA system and toilet facilities.
The Shire of Donnybrook has been allocated $150,000 to complete restoration work on the town's heritage railway station, as part of their mainstreet strategy to upgrade its central business district.
Mr Cowan said the Coalition Government was committed to supporting regional towns diversify their economy and facilitate new development opportunities.
"Collie and Donnybrook are both feeling the impact of economic change,” he said.
“By funding key projects like this, the Government is supporting these towns to maximise opportunities for economic growth by developing and attracting new business.
“It is in line with the Government’s commitment to building stronger communities.”
Collie MLA Dr Hilda Turnbull, who has been a strong advocate of both projects, said Motoring South West was already having a positive impact on Collie through the development of motor sport tourism.
“Youth and corporate driver training, as well as car club enthusiasts, have been attracted to the circuit and many local businesses in the retail and accommodation sectors are experiencing the flow-on injection of funds,” she said.
“By upgrading the track at Collie, the circuit will be able to accommodate more user groups, such as motorcyclists and Go Kart enthusiasts, making Motoring South West a viable alternative to Wanneroo Raceway.”
Dr Turnbull said restoration work of Donnybrook’s railway station was part of a strategy to support the council’s mainstreet plan to develop an attractive central business district.
The work would also restore an important piece of the towns’ history and provide a unique facility for the Donnybrook community.
