Water Resources Minister Dr Kim Hames today announced BP Refinery Kwinana Pty Ltd as the major winner of this year’s Western Australian Water Industry Awards.
BP Refinery Kwinana won both the Award for Water Treatment/Reuse and the overall Minister’s Award for Excellence.
“These two awards are in recognition and acknowledgment of BP's contribution to prudent use of valuable water resources, together with a significant benefit to the environment,” Dr Hames said.
“Their water reuse and minimisation program, which was implemented in 1997, provided a decrease in total water usage, a decrease in potable water usage, large cost savings and significant environmental benefits.”
Dr Hames said the WA Water Industry Awards -a highlight of National Water Week - were an opportunity for the industry to show-case achievements, innovation and high quality service provision.
“With a growing demand on our valuable water supplies, in both the metropolitan and rural areas, meeting this demand requires innovation and lateral solutions by members of the local water industry,” he said.
“The State Government has responsibly managed this resource in a way that has facilitated the social and economic development of the State. We have done this through programs such as infill sewerage, farm grants, extension of pipelines to farmlands and our $400 million five-year plan to restore a reliable and secure water supply for the metropolitan area.”
Dr Hames said the quality of the 28 nominations for this year’s awards across the six categories was outstanding and notable for their variety.
Other winners included:
The Countryman Award for Farm Water Supply - Solar Energy Systems;
Curtin Radio Award for Excellence in Customer Service - South West Irrigation Management Co-operative;
Water and Rivers Commission Award for Irrigation/Drainage Project - Peet and Company;
Award for Water Treatment/Reuse - BP Refinery Kwinana Pty Ltd;
Award for Plumbing Product or System - Boulevard Dry Cleaners; and -
Environmental Solutions International Ltd Award for Water Conservation - Amcor Packaging Australasia.
