Two billion-dollar exporters, Austal Ships and Woodside Energy, are among this year’s winners in the Western Australian Industry and Export awards announced tonight.
But small companies also scored. Dual awards went to Osborne Park radio technology firm, Q-Mac Electronics, whose marketing department of just three people services 40 countries.
Other awards were taken out by highly innovative businesses including wheat-filled toy maker, Hotbods Creatures of Belmont, maritime safety trainers, Marine and Offshore Group of Nedlands and business software manufacturer Lasata of West Perth.
Commerce and Trade Minister Hendy Cowan said this year’s winners reflected the skills and passions of Australia today. For example, the builders of the Northbridge Tunnel, the Baulderstone Clough joint venture, received the prize for engineering and the developers and promotors of the Olympic coin and medal collection, Gold Corporation, were acclaimed for outstanding marketing success.
“Western Australia now earns $25 billion annually in exports,” the Minister said.
“Manufacturing has lifted its share by 11 per cent in the past year.”
Mr Cowan said the award winners employed tens of thousands of Western Australians, with an increasing number in the export-focused services sector.
For the second consecutive year the agribusiness export award was won by Manjimup Coolstores Syndicate and the education award by Curtin University of Technology.
The inaugural export award for arts and entertainment was given to West Perth’s CVA Film and Television, a program maker to Asian and other global media outlets.
Mr Cowan presented the Premier’s award for overall performance to Austal Ships, which took out other awards for design and large manufacturing exports.
The Industry and Export Awards are sponsored by the Department of Commerce and Trade, Austrade, The West Australian, Hamersley Iron, BankWest Business, Corrs Chambers Westgarth, KPMG and Telstra.
The awards were presented at a gala event held at the Burswood Ballroom.
