Mines Minister Norman Moore has offered the renewal of petroleum exploration permit EP 389 centred around Gingin, north of Perth and covering about 2,000sq.km.
The permit was originally issued in 1994 and is held by a joint venture between Empire Oil Company (WA) Ltd and CalEnergy Gas (UK) Ltd.
Mr Moore said because the permit area included a number of conservation reserves, the Department of Minerals and Energy had consulted the Department of Conservation and Land Management in accordance with a protocol established between the two agencies.
“It should be noted that the renewal of the petroleum title, which reserves petroleum exploration exclusively to its title holders, is merely the first step of the process,” he said.
“Each and every petroleum activity proposed by the joint venture requires separate approval which ensures that each activity is individually assessed and potential environmental impacts are managed successfully.”
A map showing the location of the permit in relation to reserved areas is available at the Department of Minerals and Energy on request.
