Sport and Recreation Minister Norman Moore today announced that the State Government would provide an extra $1.5 million to fund recreational trails in Western Australia over the next three years.

Mr Moore said the Lotteries Commission money would fund the second stage of the successful Trailswest program.

It meant that the State Government was contributing a total of $3 million over six years to fund recreation trails in WA.

The funding announcement coincided with the opening today of two mountain bike trails at Mundaring – Mundaring Loop Trail and Carinyah Trail.

The two trails were opened by Health Minister and Darling Range MLA John Day (representing Mr Moore) and Lotteries Commission chairman Lloyd Stewart.

Mr Moore said that the trails formed part of the Hardwood cycle trail, which would eventually extend from Perth to Albany, mirroring for cyclists what the Bibbulman track is for walkers.

“With the opening of these two bike trails today, the Trailswest program run by the Ministry of Sport and Recreation now includes more than 2,000 kilometres of walking, cycling and horseriding trails around the State,” he said.

Mr Moore said that recreation trails provided the facilities to support the most popular outdoor recreation activities in the community with follow-on benefits for health, tourism and regional development.

Under the Trailswest program, local government authorities and community groups can get grants on a dollar-for-dollar basis.

Mr Moore also announced details of 28 successful applicants from around the State for the last funding round.
