The Shire of Irwin today received a Certificate of Merit Award from Local Government Minister Paul Omodei for the quality of its 1999-2000 budget.

On a visit to Geraldton, Mr Omodei said the shire had made a significant effort to gain a ranking of 18 out of the 145 budgets examined.

“This is the second year in succession that the shire has been awarded a Certificate of Merit which shows a consistently high level of performance,” he said.

“The Shire of Irwin’s performance is well in excess of the benchmark level.”

The Minister said council budgets were assessed by the Department of Local Government for their level of compliance with legislative requirements, general presentation and provision of information to the reader.

While in the region, Mr Omodei also opened Dongara’s South Beach toilet facility, which was funded in part by a $25,000 grant from the State Government’s Community Facilities Grants Program.

The program, under which the Government provided $1 million a year for four years, has resulted in a total of $10 million worth of community and tourist facilities, mainly in non-metropolitan Western Australia.
