A group of Dalkeith Primary School students will be representing every Western Australian when they cheer on our athletes at the 2000 Paralympic Games in Sydney next month.

Attending a special ceremony at the school this morning, Premier Richard Court presented the thirteen Year 7 students with certificates making them Honorary Youth Ambassadors for Western Australia and a special Western Australia pack, including a t-shirt, badges and cap.

The students will be involved in a range of educational activities during their visit and six of the children will assist in medal presentation ceremonies at the Games.

They will join 11 students from Cervantes Primary School, some of whom will also be involved in medal presentations. These students were made Honorary Youth Ambassadors by the Premier in June.

Mr Court said the school and the students participated in the Link Elite Athletes Program, known a LEAP, an initiative of the Sydney Paralympics Organising Committee which involves schools sponsoring and supporting an elite athlete.

“The Paralympic Games will be a wonderful spectacle and I congratulate Dalkeith Primary school for making the effort to be a part of this exciting event,” Mr Court said.

“We can all take inspiration from the efforts of the Paralympians and I am sure the students will find the trip to be an experience to remember forever.

“While there has been a heavy focus on the Sydney Olympic Games, we should not forget that the 2000 Paralympics will be bigger than Melbourne’s 1956 Olympic Games and will attract thousands of competitors from several hundred countries.

“Western Australia has a proud Paralympic tradition. In fact, if our State had competed in its own right in the Atlanta Games, we would have ranked seventh in the total medal tally.”

The State Government is working with the City of Perth to organise a welcome home parade for Western Australia's paralympians and officials, which will take place on November 3rd.
