Water Resources Minister Dr Kim Hames said today that the community’s voice would be heard on the future management of Cockburn Sound.
State Cabinet had endorsed the membership of three community representatives on the Cockburn Sound Management Council.
“The general community will be represented by Cockburn Sound Conservation Committee member and former Town of Kwinana councillor Mr David Nelson and senior environmental scientist Mr John Polglaze,” Dr Hames said.
“Both men have a strong environmental background and are familiar with the issues facing Cockburn Sound.
“Ms Hazel Duggan will represent Community Networking Inc. as the third community representative.
“These appointments will add to the representation of local councils, industry and conservation groups working with Government agencies to ensure the future environmental health of Cockburn Sound.
Other organisations represented on the council include RecFishWest, the Cockburn Powerboat Association, Cockburn City Council, Kwinana Town Council, Rockingham City Council and the South West Group.
“There are many challenges ahead for this council,” Dr Hames said.
“It has been charged with the responsibility of overseeing the environmental management of what is the most heavily used marine embayment in Western Australia.
“First on the agenda is the development of an environmental management plan setting specific objectives and targets for protecting the Sound, developed at the same time as an Environmental Protection Policy to be prepared by the Environmental Protection Authority.”
Dr Hames will provide the opening address at the council’s first meeting on August 9 in Fremantle.
