Sport and Recreation Minister Norman Moore said today that the new soccer-rugby sports stadium would be built on the Wellington Street site between the freeway and the Perth Entertainment Centre.
Mr Moore said the site had been identified as the preferred location for a stadium by the two consortiums bidding to build the Perth convention and exhibition centre.
“Both consortiums are offering to build a 19,000-seat stadium with lights, which will have the capacity to expand to 30,000 seats when demand justifies such an expansion,” the Minister said.
“The stadium will provide a potential home for Perth Glory, as well as any future State rugby team.
“It is expected to be completed by the 2002-03 soccer season.”
Mr Moore said the Wellington Street site’s closeness to the city would bring more people into Northbridge and the city.
“This will provide significant opportunities to Northbridge traders in particular,” he said.
