    Communities throughout Western Australia have one last chance to create a lasting reminder to the Centenary of Federation.

    Citizenship and Multicultural Interests Minister Rob Johnson today announced the fifth and final allocation of grants for Centenary of Federation projects.

    “The final round will see $1 million allocated to projects and events in Western Australia that are of lasting value to the community,” Mr Johnson said.

    “This is the last chance for communities to access the funds to pay tribute to this important milestone in Australia’s history.”

    The State Government has allocated a total of $3.5 million to projects that celebrate the Centenary of Federation in 2001.

    Mr Johnson said a total of 179 Western Australian communities thus far had been funded to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Federation in 2001.

    Both regional and metropolitan communities were well represented in the fourth funding round, covering the State from Derby in the north, Walpole in the south and Kalgoorlie/Boulder in the east.

    Of the 84 successful projects, 56 will benefit communities in regional Western Australia while the remaining 28 projects will enhance the lives of communities in the greater metropolitan area.

    Examples of successful projects include:
    • $1400 for Wundowie, where a mural painted by residents and children will decorate a recently completed water tank at the entrance of the town;
    • $21,500 to the WA Police Historical Society to commission a book on the 150-year history of the Water Police;
    • $13,110 for a Centenary of Federation playground at Cullacabardee, which will be built entirely by the community’s construction worker trainees;
    • $14,230 to the Maylands Historical Society’s publication of a book documenting the contribution that Western Australia has made to the nation’s aviation history since Federation;
    • $11,000 for the Derby Pastoral Trail Interpretation. The 12-km walking and cycling trail traces the route of early drovers bringing their cattle to the Port of Derby between the 1890s and 1960s and; -
    • $20,000 grant to cover the cost of structures and “sun safe” family facilities in Dampier.

    Mr Johnson said successful projects in other regions included the Lower Lesmurdie Falls Federation Trail, Federation Place in Narrogin, Pingrup Historical and Community Facility Centre, the City of Gosnells Federation Sculpture Project, restoration of Old Yalgoo Jail, the Collie Federation Community Park and Pemberton’s Federation of Living Legends.

    For more information about the fifth round of grants, write to the Centenary of Federation State Committee at the Constitutional Centre of WA, Havelock St, West Perth, 6872, or phone 1800 653 357.

    Applications close on June 16, 2000.
