    Fair Trading Minister Doug Shave has announced that a parliamentary select committee will investigate the pricing of petroleum products in Western Australia.

    “The recent jump in the retail price of petrol again raised community concerns about the fairness of the pricing structure and big price variations,” Mr Shave said.

    “The inquiry will look at petrol and LPG prices in Perth and regional areas.”

    Key issues to be investigated include the:
    • reasons for significant price fluctuations;
    • impact of State and Commonwealth Government policies, taxes and charges on prices;
    • effect on prices of current changes in the system of petroleum product franchising;
    • reasons for the high cost of LPG autogas in WA compared with other States; and -
    • necessity or desirability of legislation to reduce price differences between Perth and regional areas.

    “The committee will be seeking information from around the State and input from industry representatives and organisations,” Mr Shave said.

    “I have asked it to present its findings by the end of September.”
