The Ministry of Fair Trading will conduct an inquiry into fuel prices in Perth and regional areas.
Fair Trading Minister Doug Shave said he had asked the Ministry to conduct the inquiry because of community concern over recent big fuel price rises and large variations in price.
“This is a complex issue and there are many possible reasons for the price rises,” Mr Shave said.
“I have been asked by many country parliamentarians to have prices checked and to find out why there are big variations in price, often in the same town.”
Mr Shave said he understood the frustration of country people who had to pay petrol prices much higher than those living in Perth.
“Petrol prices are a major component of living expenses in regional areas and country people should not have to pay exorbitant prices,” Mr Shave said.
He said the inquiry would seek input from community representatives, members of parliament and petrol industry representatives.
