    Fair Trading Minister Doug Shave has welcomed the calling of submissions by the inquiry into eight Ministry of Fair Trading boards and committees.

    An advertisement in today’s The West Australian newspaper called for written submission to the inquiry in the first instance and said that people may also be asked to appear before it in person.

    “Inquiry chairman, retired judge Mr Ivan Gunning and committee members,Mr Digby Blight (former Director General of the Ministry of Premier and Cabinet and Commissioner of Public Sector Standards) and Dr Diana Newman (an expert in liquidation matters), have moved quickly since the inquiry was announced on February 8,” Mr Shave said.

    Support staff and office arrangements were well advanced and the first hearings were expected to be held early in March.

    “The inquiry has been given the power to call people to appear before it to provide information relevant to its terms of reference,” Mr Shave said.

    “It will be able to call members of the public as well as public servants who it believes can assist it in its work.”

    The inquiry will review the functions, powers, structure, procedures, resourcing and operational costs of the boards and recommend administrative or legislative changes it considers necessary.

    Mr Shave said that under its terms of reference, the inquiry must forward any evidence of wrongdoing or malpractice it receives to the appropriate authorities.

    The first subject for the inquiry will be the Finance Brokers Supervisory Board.

    This will be followed by the:
    • Real Estate and Business Agents Board;
    • Land Valuers Licensing Board;
    • Settlement Agents Supervisory Board;
    • Builders Registration Board;
    • Building Disputes Committee;
    • Painters Registration Board; and -
    • Motor Vehicle Dealers Licensing Board;

    Note: Submissions should be sent to
