    Twenty-seven country organisations receive funds to run holiday programs

    Twenty-seven country organisations have received funds to run youth development holiday programs in January, Family and Children’s Services Minister Rhonda Parker announced today.

    “These programs provide activities during school holidays for young people in high school years 8-12,” Mrs Parker said.

    “They help improve the confidence, self-respect, self-esteem, teamwork and leadership skills of young people though a wide range of indoor and outdoor activities.

    “Young people will be able to participate in activities such as abseiling, camping, bush walking, rock-climbing, arts and crafts, theatre workshops and a variety of sports and team games.

    “These activities will provide young people with challenges and many new experiences. It will give them a break from their normal environment and provide an opportunity to meet people and acquire new skills.”

    Mrs Parker said the funding demonstrated the State Government’s commitment to supporting young people and their families.

    The following organisations have received funding:

    Eastern Goldfields YMCA - $2,000 for a five-week holiday program for young people aged 12-17 years from the Kalgoorlie-Boulder area. The program will be conducted at the Eastern Goldfields YMCA and surrounding areas. Activities will include squash, basketball, swimming, go-karting, computer games and a one-week camp in Esperance.

    Esperance Care Services - $2,000 for a seven-day adventure camp for young people aged 14-18 years from the local area. The camp will be based at the Gracetown Caravan Park in Margaret River. Activities will include surfing, rock-climbing, caving, skate-boarding, cooking and discussion groups.

    Carnarvon Police and Citizen’s Youth Club (PCYC) - $1,350 for a 12-day holiday program for young people aged 12-17 years from Carnarvon. The program will be conducted at the PCYC Complex, the town beach, Quobba Beach and local bushland. Activities will include rollerskating, fishing, beach sports, team games, bushcraft and navigation exercises.

    Shire of Mullewa - $1,400 for a holiday program for young people aged 12-16 years from Mullewa. Those attending will be provided with activities such as abseiling, canoeing, rollerskating, discos, streetsports, arts and crafts, basketball clinics and pool games. The program will be conducted over a four-week period in Geraldton, Dongara, and Kalbarri and the Town Hall, Swimming Pool, Recreation Centre and Resource Centre in Mullewa.

    Geraldton-Greenough Youth Advisory Council - $900 for a four-day holiday program for young people aged 12-17 years from the Geraldton-Greenough area. The program will be conducted at the Geraldton Community Education Centre, Tarcoola and the foreshore in Geraldton and Kalbarri. Those attending will be able to participate in surfing lessons, abseiling, beach volleyball and a bonfire/lantern stalk.

    Geraldton Streetwork Aboriginal Corporation - $1,000 for a 14-day holiday program for young people aged 12-18 years from Geraldton and the Midwest Region. Young people will be able to attend an overnight camp at Gunnadoo Farm, a day trip to Dongara, a ‘Water Fun Day’ on the Geraldton and Dongara foreshores and a ‘Fun Night’ comprising a barbecue and recreational activities at the Geraldton Aquatic Centre.

    Irrungadji Group Association Inc, Marble Bar - $1,500 for a seven-day holiday program for young people in secondary school years 8-12 from Nullagine. Participants will be provided with camping trips in the local area and sporting and cross-cultural activities with other communities such as Nullagine and Jigalong.

    Newman YMCA Youth Services Inc - $2,000 for a six-week holiday program for young people aged 12-17 years from the local area. Participants will be provided with a range of activities including mural art, night-hiking, horse-riding, screen printing, creation of a 3-D YMCA icon, canoeing, leadership training, a motivational workshop, a costume party, a barbecue and pool party, a sports day and an under-age rage with a jamming session and live music. The program will be conducted at various locations including the Newman YMCA, Newman Aquatic Centre, Newman Recreation Centre, Gunnadoo Horse Yards, Opthalmia Dam, Karajini National Park and Radio Hill.

    Onslow Youth Centre Inc - $1,500 for a holiday program for young people aged 12-18 years from the Onslow Youth Centre and the Onslow community. The program will operate two, two-and-a-half day-camps, one for girls and the other for boys. The camps will be based at either Ashburton River or Minderoo Station and activities will include fishing, bushcraft skills and cultural exercises.

    Northcliffe Family Centre Inc - Northcliffe Youth Voice - $2,000 for a four-day holiday program for young people aged 12-17 years from the Northcliffe district. Participants will be provided with a range of positive recreational activities not available in Northcliffe, including beach games, fishing, camping, tennis, volleyball and Christmas shopping in Bunbury. The program will be based at the Koombana Bay Resort in Bunbury.

    Winjan Aboriginal Corporation, Mandurah - $1,200 for a seven-day holiday program for young people in secondary school years 8-12 from the Peel Region. Participants will be provided with a range of activities including indoor volley-ball, ceramic making, a two day camp at Rottnest and trips to the cinema, Adventure World and Cable Ski Water Park.

    Boyup Brook Teenscene - $847 for a holiday program for young people aged 14-16 years from the Boyup Brook area. The program will be conducted at the Youth Centre in Boyup Brook and surrounding areas over a four-week period. Participants will be provided with a range of recreational, sporting and educational activities designed to build self-esteem and promote decision-making and leadership skills. Activities will include a foot rally, a three-day horse-riding camp, canoeing and a boat and water safety session conducted by a qualified instructor.

    Old York Fire Station Community Centre - $900 for a five-day holiday program for young people in secondary school years 8-10 from York and surrounding districts. Participants will be provided with an overnight camp at Lake Leschenaultia, a range of night activities at the local youth centre and day trips to the movies, the Wet and Wild Adventure Park and Scitech.

    NEEDAC, Bunbury - $1,117 for a one-week holiday program for young people aged 13-17 years from Bunbury. The program will be conducted in Bunbury and Perth. Those attending will be able to participate in canoeing, sailing, camping, excursions and bush and sporting activities.

    Fairbridge Western Australia Inc - $1,620 for an eight-day holiday program for young people aged 12-17 years from the Peel Region. Those attending will be provided with two four-day camps at the Fairbridge Village in Pinjarra. Camp activities will include white-water rafting, abseiling, yoga, drama exercises and a museum tour.

    Shire of Dardanup - $800 for a day trip to Adventure World for young people aged 13-17 years from the Shires of Capel and Dardanup.

    YMCA of Busselton - $1,050 for a five-day holiday program for young people aged 12-17 years from the Busselton and Dunsborough area. Those attending will be provided with a day of canoeing in the Blackwood River, a day at Adventure World in Perth, a day of yachting in Geographe Bay, a day of abseiling and rock-climbing in Margaret River and a day of caving in Boranup Forest in Margaret River.

    Avon Youth Services - $650 for a two-day camp for predominantly Aboriginal young people in secondary school years 11-12 from Northam. The camp will be based at the Nanga Bush Camp in Dwellingup. Those attending will be provided with a range of activities designed to develop leadership and management skills and promote community involvement. Key Aboriginal community members will also be involved in the camp as mentors.

    Toodyay Blue Light Youth Group - $500 for a day trip to Adventure World for young people aged 13-17 years from Toodyay and surrounding districts.

    Toodyay Community Resource Centre - $486 for a two-day holiday program for young people aged 13-17 years from Toodyay. Those attending will be transported to Scarborough beach and provided with a one-hour “Safe Swimming” demonstration by surf lifesavers.

    Wyndham Youth Services - $1,130 for a holiday program for ‘at risk’ young people aged 12-18 years residing in or visiting Wyndham from surrounding communities. Participants will be provided with a range of activities designed to enhance self-esteem and teamwork skills. The program will be conducted in and around Wyndham and activities will include arts and crafts, swimming, fishing, sports, bush skills lessons and cultural exercises.

    Kununurra Youth Services - $750 for a holiday program for ‘at risk’ young people aged 12-18 years residing in or visiting Kununurra. Participants will be provided with a range of activities designed to enhance self-esteem and teamwork skills. The program will be conducted in and around Kununurra and activities will include swimming, canoeing, abseiling, sports, bush skills lessons and cultural exercises.

    Diocese of Broome - $400 for a five-day holiday program for young people in secondary school years 8-12 from Broome and outlying communities. Those attending will be provided with a painting and clay workshop, a fishing camp, a day of informal activities at the beach and team-building exercises. The program will be conducted in Broome, the local beach and Prices Point.

    Derby Aboriginal Sporting Association - $750 for an eight-day holiday program for young people aged 13-17 years from the Derby Region. Those attending will be provided with a bush survival camp, first aid lessons, a disco, a basketball competition, day trips and activities such as swimming and fishing. The program will be conducted in the Derby Region.

    Kalumburu Youth Group - $900 for a holiday program for ‘at risk’ young people aged 12-18 years from Kalumburu. Participants will be provided with a range of activities designed to enhance self-esteem and teamwork skills. The program will be conducted in and around Kalumburu and activities will include swimming, fishing, arts and crafts, sports, bush skills lessons and cultural exercises.

    Bardi Aboriginal Association Inc - $600 for a six-day holiday program for young people aged 12-18 years from the One Arm Point community. The program will be conducted at One Arm Point, Sunday Island and the Dampier Peninsula. Young people will be provided with a range of sporting, recreational and cultural activities. Parents will also be encouraged to participate in these activities.

    Broome Youth Support Group - $650 for an eight-day holiday program for young people aged 12-17 years from Broome. The program will be conducted in the Lombadina/Djarindjin Communities and the local drop-in centre. Those attending will be provided with a three-day camp, ceramics and jewellery making lessons and arts and crafts activities.
