    Fourteen metropolitan organisations receive funds to run holiday programs

      Fourteen metropolitan organisations have received funds to run youth development holiday programs in January, Family and Children’s Services Minister Rhonda Parker announced today.

      “These programs provide activities during school holidays for young people in high school years 8-12,” Mrs Parker said.

      “They help improve the confidence, self-respect, self-esteem, teamwork and leadership skills of young people though a wide range of indoor and outdoor activities.

      “Young people will be able to participate in activities such as abseiling, camping, bush walking, rock-climbing, arts and crafts, theatre workshops and a variety of sports and team games.

      “These activities will provide young people with challenges and many new experiences. It will give them a break from their normal environment and provide an opportunity to meet people and acquire new skills.”

      Mrs Parker said the funding demonstrated the State Government’s commitment to supporting young people and their families.

      The following organisations have received funding:

      Melville Community Arts - $1,320 for an eight-day holiday program for young people aged 13-16 years from the City of Melville and surrounding areas. Participants will be provided with sculpture and mosaics workshops at the Atwell Arts Centre in Alfred Cove.

      City of Fremantle - $600 for an eight-day holiday program for young people aged 12-18 years from the South West Metropolitan area. Activities will include surfing, horse-riding, bush-walking, wall-climbing, trips to the movies and Adventure World. The program will be conducted at a variety of locations throughout the metropolitan area.

      City of Cockburn - $2,000 for a 10-day holiday program for young people aged 12-18 years from the City of Cockburn. The program will be conducted in and around Cockburn and Coogee Beach. Those attending will be provided with a range of adventure and cultural activities requested by local youth.

      South Metropolitan Aboriginal Corporation, Orelia - $1,080 for a six-day holiday program for young people aged 12-18 years from the local area. The program will be conducted at the Kwinana Recreation Centre, Calista Oval, Rockingham Beach and the Kwinana Arts Centre. Activities will include volley-ball, basketball, mural painting and trips to the movies.

      Youth Charities Trust Inc, Perth - $1,750 for a two-and-a-half-day camp for ‘at risk’ young people aged 12-18 years from the local area. The camp will be based in Bickley. Participants will be provided with a range of activities designed to enhance their self-esteem, improve their communication and conflict resolution skills and assist them to deal with grief and stress.

      Hamersley Community Centre - $1,500 for a five-day holiday program for young people aged 12-16 years from local high schools. The program will be conducted at Baldivis, Hillary’s Boat Harbour, Belmont and Yanchep. Participants will be provided with a range of mentally and physically challenging activities including archery, trapezing, go-karting and horse-riding.

      City of Wanneroo - Yanchep/Clarkson Youth Service - $1,750 for a 20-day holiday program for young people in secondary school years 8-12 from the local area. Those attending will be able to participate in modelling and mural arts workshops, leadership camps and excursions to Lancelin. The program will be conducted at the Two Rocks Recreation Centre, Quinns Rocks, Claytons Beach and Mindarie.

      North East Region Youth Council, Midland - $1,090 for a four-day camp for predominantly Aboriginal young people aged 14-17 years from Midland. The camp will be based at the Deer Farm Camp Site at Margaret River. Activities will include caving, abseiling, fishing, lifestyle group discussions and an Aboriginal cultural tour.

      Bassendean Youth Service - $790 for a four-day adventure camp for disadvantaged or ‘at risk’ young people aged 12-18 years from the local area. Participants will be provided with a range of challenging activities including hiking, orienteering and teamwork exercises. The camp will be based in the Stirling Ranges.

      Koondoola and Girrawheen Youth - Community Youth Health Service - $1,920 for a six-day holiday program for girls aged 13-16 years from Girrawheen, Balga, Koondoola and Mirrabooka. Those attending will be able to participate in activities such as horse-riding, cable water-skiing, abseiling, ice-skating, archery, boxing, surfing, planning workshops and a camp. Activities will be conducted in Wanneroo, Spearwood, Ferndale, Scarborough, Mandurah, the Kevin Smith Community Office and the Herb Graham Recreation Centre in Mirrabooka.

      Lesmurdie Baptist Church Youth Ministry - $1,200 for a four-day adventure camp for young people aged 12-18 years from the local area. Participants will be provided with a range of challenging outdoor activities designed to promote personal development and enhance self-esteem and teamwork skills. The camp will be based at various sites in the Margaret River area. Activities will include abseiling, caving, rock-climbing and hiking.

      Karawara Community Project Inc - $2,000 for a 19-day holiday program for predominantly Aboriginal young people aged 12-16 years from Karawara, Bentley and surrounding areas. Participants will be provided with a range of activities designed to enhance personal development and self-esteem. Centre-based activities will be conducted at the Karawara Community Centre, and a camp offering positive peer support and interaction with Police Liaison Officers will be conducted at a rural location.

      Armadale, Gosnells and Districts Youth Resources Inc - $2,000 for a 12-day holiday program for disadvantaged young people aged 12-18 years from Armadale and Gosnells. Participants will be provided with a range of indoor and outdoor activities designed to promote personal development and enhance self-esteem. The program will be conducted at the Armadale Lotteries House or the Armadale Youth Resource Centre, and various locations throughout the metropolitan area.

      City of Gosnells - $1,000 for a 10-day holiday program for disadvantaged young people aged 12-18 years from Gosnells. Participants will be provided with a range of indoor and outdoor activities designed to promote personal development and enhance self-esteem. The program will be conducted at the Youth Resource Centre in Kenwick.
