16/8/99A youth Parliament made up of 91 students from around the State sitting in Perth today will help students realise the significance of women gaining the vote in the State 100 years ago and of their role in politics, Minister for Women’s Interests Rhonda Parker said today.A student from a school in each of the 57 Legislative Assembly districts and 34 Legislative Council electoral regions met in the respective chambers of each house to form a Government and Opposition and debate issues.“This major event in the year of the Centenary of Women’s Suffrage in the State was opened by Western Australia’s first female ‘Governor’, Mrs Ruth Reid AM,” the Minister said. The student members in both Houses will have a question time, presentation of petitions, short statements to the House, debate women’s suffrage and draft a preamble to the State’s Constitution.“Student members will also be able to raise particular issues from areas they represent,” Mrs Parker said. “This will give the representatives from areas such as Moora and Exmouth, which were recently hit by natural disasters, the chance to speak about problems in those areas.”Mrs Parker said the parliamentary session will help students realise the importance of women gaining the right to vote and being engaged in the full range of activity in the community. “The women who fought for the vote 100 years ago, like the men of the time, wanted to influence the political, social and economic decisions that shaped their lives and the society in which they lived,” she said.“Gaining the right to vote led to achievements which have made such a difference to the lives of women and the broader community such as equal pay for equal work, equal rights to education, the right to enter all professions and to run for Government at all levels.“However, much still needs to be done and today’s sitting will hopefully inspire students to work towards ensuring that women have equal representation in all areas of our community.”Media contact: Owen Cole 9481 7810 A list of the students, the area they represent and member hosting them follows:LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL — STUDENT PARLIAMENT
