Transport Minister Eric Charlton today announced the start of the first stage of a $3.9 million development program for the Broome Jetty.
He said the project would provide a substantial boost to Broome's economy and provide a berthing structure which would serve the needs of the community for many years to come.
"Most of the people working on this project will be recruited from the Broome area and most of the materials and sub-contracted work will be provided by local businesses," Mr Charlton said.
Mr Charlton said the first stage of the project would start at the end of the wharf head and work back along the neck towards the land.
The work involved sand blasting the metal piles, a high pressure water wash, and airless spraying of high quality industrial paint.
"The process is environmentally friendly and has been used successfully on other jetties in WA. There will be little disruption to activities on the jetty such as recreational fishing," he said.
"The work is part of the State Government's commitment to upgrade the port to enhance the economic development of the region.
"Together with a floating breakwater pontoon and realignment of the channel marking to improve access for larger ships, these improvements will enhance facilities and services for industry, tourism and recreation," he said.
The floating pontoon, for which a total of $600,000 has been allocated in the 1998-98 State Budget, is expected to provide a major boost for the tourism and recreational fishing industry. Tenders for the pontoon will be called soon.
The first stage of the jetty refurbishment is expected to continue until at least the end of September. It is the first major upgrading of the facility for 30 years.
