Public transport fares for train, bus and ferry passengers will rise from the first service next Monday.

Transport Minister Eric Charlton said today the increases were in line with the Government's aim to have passenger fares contribute 40 per cent of the operating costs of the metropolitan public transport system.

"The fare increase will raise the cost recovery rate for public transport, relative to operating costs, from 31 per cent to 32 per cent," the Minister said.

"The increase will assist Transperth in delivering a more efficient, better managed and cost-effective public transport system."

He said most people travelled within one or two zones. They would be charged an extra 10 cents for their trip. The one-zone concession fare remained unchanged at 80 cents.

Mr Charlton said almost 65 per cent of Transperth passengers were entitled to concession travel.

"The aim is to gradually raise concession fares to half the cost of standard fares," he said.

"Increases for concession fare-paying passengers will be of similar proportion to that of standard fare-paying passengers."

He said that more than 60 per cent of passengers were still paying cash fares. A switch from cash to a MultiRider or MultiRider Plus ticket could save 15 per cent and 25 per cent respectively.

Mr Charlton said the standard fare for DayRider and MaxiRider tickets would increase from $6 to $6.50 and the concession DayRider would increase by 30 cents to $2.80.

The public can obtain fare and service information by telephoning the Transperth InfoLine 13 22 13.

(Details of fare increases are outlined in a table on Page 3).
