    Health Minister Kevin Prince today officially opened the new emergency department at the Joondalup Health Campus.

    "The $84 million Joondalup Health Campus will be more than a hospital - it will offer a totally integrated system of health care to the entire north metropolitan region," Mr Prince said.

    "The health services it will provide will substantially reduce the need for residents in the northern corridor to travel to the city-based major public teaching hospitals for treatment.

    "The new emergency department will now provide 17 beds, compared with five at the old facility.

    "In October, new intensive and coronary care units will raise the level of the emergency and critical care service in the region."

    Mr Prince said the 20-month redevelopment of the former 84-bed Wanneroo Hospital would result in a massive 340-bed collocated facility catering for both public and private patients.

    When the completed early next year, the campus would include:

    ·         intensive and coronary care units;

    ·         expanded medical and surgical services;

    ·         obstetrics and gynaecology services;

    ·         renal dialysis;

    ·         oncology facilities;

    ·         a psychiatric unit;

    ·         specialist medical centre; and -

    ·         St John Ambulance depot.

    "The Joondalup Health Campus will be one of the biggest hospitals in Western Australia and is expected to cater for 25,500 patients in its first full year of operation," Mr Prince said.

    "Its redevelopment is being conducted in stages so that in does not impact in any way on the delivery of services to patients.

    "The first stage is the new emergency department.

    "Next month the west wing, with eight new birthing suites and a renal dialysis unit, is expected to open.

    "The north wing and theatres will open later this year and the refurbishment of the east wing, which includes new paediatric and surgical wards, is expected to be completed early next year."

    Health Care of Australia was appointed on a 20-year contract and service agreement with the State Government to develop and operate the new Joondalup Health Campus.
