Premier Richard Court today recognised the contribution of the Ahern family in the development of Perth's retailing industry.
Launching the celebrations to mark the 75th anniversary of Aherns department stores in Western Australia, Mr Court said from very humble beginnings the Aherns family had built an organisation which had become a household name throughout the State.
"When Thomas Ahern took over a drapers, clothiers and furniture store in Hay Street in 1922 he would not have been aware of the impact his family company would have on the future development of retailing in Western Australia," the Premier said.
"Today Aherns is thought to be the only surviving family-owned department store in Australia."
Aherns Suburban Pty Ltd currently employs more than 1500 people and additional to its Hay Street premises the company has stores in Rockingham, Claremont, Booragoon and Karrinyup.
Mr Court applauded the company for its ongoing commitment to providing Western Australia with good locally sourced products in its stores.
"This commitment coupled with a strong dedication to offering customers service, which is second to none, has been a successful formula for the company and has stood the test of time," the Premier said.
