Transport Minister Eric Charlton today announced that Swan Transit Pty Ltd was the preferred tenderer to provide public bus services for the Midland area.
A total of five submissions were received from parties interested in operating 43 Transperth buses on the Midland route.
The submissions were examined by a Tender Evaluation Committee comprised of representatives from the Department of Transport, Ministry of Premier and Cabinet, consultants Price Waterhouse and advice from State Treasury.
"A considered examination of all tenders was undertaken by the committee which recommended, on a value-for-money basis, that Swan Transit be appointed as the preferred tenderer for the Midland route," Mr Charlton said.
Contract negotiations between Swan Transit and the Department of Transport will begin immediately.
Mr Charlton said the department had also received expressions of interest from private companies to operate Transperth bus services in the Canning, Southern River, Marmion, Wanneroo and Rockingham areas.
In July, MetroBus was named preferred tenderer to provide public transport services on the Joondalup North and Armadale South routes.
"The Joondalup, Armadale and Midland services are the first in a sequence of metropolitan bus routes which will be thrown open to private competition under the Government's public transport reform strategy," he said.
Mr Charlton congratulated Swan Transit on being named the preferred tenderer to operate the Midland service and expressed confidence that bidding for the remaining Transperth bus routes would be just as competitive and of a similarly high standard.
