Mines Minister George Cash today announced that gas from the Griffin offshore oil development in Western Australia would be piped onshore and stored underground in the Tubridgi gas field for later recovery.
"This capacity to store gas which would otherwise be wasted is part of the Government's initiative to achieve the best and most complete utilisation of our valuable energy resources," Mr Cash said.
"Benefits are already emerging as a result of the legislative package introduced into Parliament earlier this year to encourage petroleum exploration.
"I congratulate Doral Resources and its Tubridgi co-venturers and BHP Petroleum, Mobil and Inpex Alpha for their efforts in meeting community standards and conserving gas resources."
