The Department of Minerals and Energy will be expanding its Collie office to service the whole of the South-West region between Perth, Southern Cross and Albany.
Announcing the decision, Mines Minister George Cash and Member for Collie Dr Hilda Turnbull, said the move signalled the changes which would come into effect with the new Mines Safety and Inspection Act and Regulations which brings coal and metalliferous mines under the same legislation.
Dr Turnbull said the decision was a welcome boost to Collie, giving it added significance as a regional and mining centre.
Mr Cash said tenders would be called within the next two weeks for extensions to the department's existing building in Wittenoom Street Collie, and staff would begin moving to the office in January.
Additional staff for the new regional office would include two district mining engineers, environmental, occupational health, machinery and electrical inspectors plus office support staff.
