Mines Minister George Cash today announced the appointment of Mr Kenneth Royce Perry as director general of the Department of Minerals and Energy.
Mr Perry, 44, has worked for 21 years with CRA. He is a graduate in Chemistry from the University of Western Australia and holds a Master's Degree in Business Administration from Harvard Business School.
Mr Cash said Mr Perry had an extensive background in the minerals industry. He started his working career with Hamersley Iron and subsequently worked for Argyle Diamonds in Perth, Bougainville Copper in Papua New Guinea and in 1990 was appointed managing director of Conzinc Asia, the CRA-owned trading and investment house based in Singapore.
Before returning to Perth he was president of a steel-rolling mill in Taiwan.
Mr Cash said the Department of Minerals and Energy had a century-long tradition of service to the mining and energy industries and he welcomed Mr Perry, who would ensure that the tradition of service was maintained.
Mr Perry replaces Dr Des Kelly who was appointed chief executive officer of the Department of Resources Development late in 1993.
Mr Perry is expected to take up his new appointment early next month.
