The West Australian Symphony Orchestra has been awarded a $20,000 State Government grant to make the City of Perth Symphony in the city an environmentally friendly event.
Environment and Climate Change Minister David Templeman said the grant would ensure the free community arts event would be ‘Waste Smart’.
“This grant will ensure this magnificent event will have minimal impact on the environment, providing maximum entertainment to thousands of Western Australians.
“City of Perth Symphony in the City is a fantastic way to showcase WA’s acclaimed orchestra and our magnificent environment.
“The Esplanade will serve as a lovely outdoor concert arena and I am told this year’s musical line-up will delight aficionados while also serving as a great introduction to classical music for the uninitiated.”
WASO chief executive officer Keith Venning said the free event would be staged at 8pm, Sunday, December 7 at the Esplanade and would feature the WASO, WASO chorus, along with conductor Guy Noble.
“With more than 300 people on stage we will present favourites from ‘Carmina Burana’ and Handel’s ‘Messiah.’ It will also include Tchaikovsky’s ever popular 1812 Overture,” Mr Venning said.
“The City of Perth Symphony in the City is about giving the wider community the opportunity to enjoy our music and we hope to attract as many as 15,000 people to this year’s event.
“The major event supporters are the City of Perth and Lotterywest.
“This grant will enable us to minimise the amount of waste generated and to better manage what waste is created.
“The grant will contribute to food and drink being served in environmentally friendly containers and we will also be able to provide infrastructure including a skip, sulo bins and glass recycling stations as well as biodegradable rubbish bags for concert goers.”
The Minister said the grant was made available to WASO through the State Government’s Towards Zero Waste initiative and was funded through the State’s levy on waste dumped at urban landfill sites.
“These grants are one of the innovative ways the Carpenter Government is acting now for the future,” Mr Templeman said.
